Unbeatable Moments: When City Tropics met the Glamping Life

I grew up camping, seeing tents and teepees and trailers discovered through an Indian themed campground in Spotsylvania, Virginia. It’s a tradition that would pass down to my first cousins and I from my mother and her siblings, which had ultimately started with my Grandparents. Additionally as kids, once per year, my cousins and I were sent away on a weekly church camp located off the West River in Annapolis, MD. As urban kids from Baltimore, we were lucky to experience canoes, campfires, and cabins as vernaculars in our youth.

In 2018, the idea of camping is a hard sell, most of my friends decline straight-up after considering the what ifs: lack of electricity, wifi, and running water, while potentially dodging bears, insects, and the campfire killer (think Jason, Friday the 13th), etc.

But the idea of Glamping, having all the necessities of the outdoors mixed in with minimal sacrifice, is a best of both worlds options that meets more appeal.

About a week ago, collective retreats invited us out to help celebrate the grand opening of its first urban retreat, Collective Governors Island. I couldn’t turn down an invite to Governors Island, namely for its picturesque views, and to also grasp all the hype of why people go here in the first place. Namely, non-native New Yorkers will use whatever excuse we can to get the hell away from the city, even if just for one night.

Chronicling life and relishing on full circle moments are always ideal.

Here’s my ode to some unbeatable moments at one of New York City’s hottest new escapes for the Summer, Collective Governors Island :
New Yorkers will whatever opportunity we can just to get away from Manhattan, even if just for one night.

One intrigue behind visiting CGI is that guests will make history as first-time overnighters on NYC’s iconic Governors Island.
Designed by Collective Retreats’ in-house designer, Cassie Novick, CGI’s aesthetic is inspired by Scandinavian minimalism merged with the Island’s nautical history.

Guest rooms include plush beds, an in-tent French Press coffee bar, electricity, and everyone’s number one accessory, Wi-Fi.
From luxury tents, barbecue options, smores and a skyline view of the city, this Summer retreat is a best of both worlds option that brings all the necessities of the outdoors mixed in with convenience and minimal sacrifice.
Their Summit Tents are equipped with more high-end amenities, including beds with 1,500 thread count sheets, private en-suite bathrooms, and private decks.

Cheers to more Glamping in 2018.
